Things To Do

Children’s Museum of Houston

Expanded in 2009, the over 90,000 square foot Children’s Museum of Houston, “A Playground for Your Mind,” is one of the biggest and most popular in the United States. Located in the Museum District, the Museum entertains toddlers to older children with 14 hands-on galleries that educate while they entertain.

The target audience for the galleries is from birth to 12 years old and their families. Only a few activities are restricted to kids over 5 or children younger than 35 months and their caretakers.

For babies and toddlers, there is an entire floor called the Tot*Spot focusing on developmentally appropriate items for the children to explore. This floor includes a ball and pillow pit, mirrors to gather a sense of self and many buttons and switches to see how cause and effect works.

Most of the exhibits are focused on older children including the popular Kidtropolis exhibit. Here kids get a debit card called a Kid Card that allows them to go on a shopping spree to purchase goods and services in this kid-run town. Children can choose a profession to get wages of 20 Kidtropolis Dollars they can put on their Kid Card.

One of the most unique experiences in the Children’s Museum of Houston is the S.E.C.R.E.T (Special Elite Crime Resolution and Espionage Team) headquarters in the spy interactive experience. The exhibit uses digital technology to allow kids to do secret missions throughout the Museum to stop a virtual bad guy.

A great number of the exhibits give hands-on experience with science, including electrical properties, invention, math, reading, nutrition, computers, environmental science, water dynamics, experiments, physics, biology, and art.

Visitor Tips

Mornings are the best time to avoid crowds and lines for popular exhibits.

Check the website calendar for special events. Just about every day at the Museum there are special events.

Though strollers are allowed in the building, they can be difficult to get around certain areas that get crowded.

The Children’s Museum of Houston is one of the top attractions in Houston and guest intending to visit multiple destinations can save money purchasing a CityPASS.

Visitors should wear closed toed shoes for the climbing activities. Comfortable too, given the size of the museum.

The Fiddle Sticks Toys store located in the Museum carries a wide variety of educational and inspirational toys meant for kids of all ages.

Outside food is not allowed in the museum, but the full-service “Fresh Café” offers a variety of healthy, kid-friendly food items.
