Houston is no stranger to the Super Bowl. Despite never having a team from Houston play in the big game the history of the Super Bowl can’t be written without highlighting the contributions of our hometown. There are 118 players who grew up in Houston and Southeast Texas that have gone on to play in the Super Bowl, with at least one player from the area competing in 48 of the last 50 Super Bowls.
Some Houstonians have played in as many as four Super Bowls (Larry Izzo, Ted Johnson, Thurman Thomas) and have won as many as three Super Bowl rings (Cliff Branch, Larry Izzo, Tim McKyer, Ted Johnson). Five of our native sons on this list (Darrell Green, Mike Singletary, Michael Strahan, Emmitt Thomas, Thurman Thomas) have gone on to become members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Below, you will see and read about Houston’s rich Super Bowl history, Houston’s contributions to the game and how these men came from our neighborhoods to reach the biggest stage in sports. We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the impact Houston and the surrounding area has had on the Super Bowl through the years.
