Growing and Thriving with the Numbers to Prove it
Probably one of the most notable sections of Houston is the Texas Medical Center (TMC), known for their innovation, technology and first-class care that has been recognized with multiple accolades across the country for decades.
The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world and is home to some of the best hospitals and research facilities in the world. There are more than 50 institutions in the area.
The Texas Medical Center is centrally located, just a few miles from downtown Houston, down the street from Rice University and coincidentally, it is just about a mile from NRG Stadium, home to Super Bowl LI!
Texas Medical Center by the Numbers:
According to their website, TMC sees more than 8 million patients a year, 750,000 ER visits per year, and 180,000 surgeries each year. Did you know TMC performs a surgery every three minutes? Needless to say, it’s a busy and bustling part of the Houston community and home to some of the best doctors and medical staff in the world.
TMC delivers one baby every 20 minutes, resulting in 26,280 births per calendar year and has more than 106,000 employees. Talk about a happening place!
The Texas Medical Center has been making progress in medicine for the last 91 years and isn’t slowing down anytime soon. To date, there is approximately $3 billion worth of construction projects currently underway to make room for all the advancements and innovations to come.
The area is also home to the world’s largest children’s hospital (Texas Children’s Hospital) and the world’s largest cancer hospital (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center), which is why so many patients travel from other states and cities to receive the high-level of care they get at TMC, compared to other hospitals.
According to VisitHoustonTexas.com, “The annual survey conducted by US News and World Report on “America’s Best Hospitals” has ranked at least one Texas Medical Center institution in all 19 categories of care for adults and all 10 care categories in pediatrics.”
During your visit, we hope you won’t need to visit the world-renowned TMC, but rest assured you’ll be in incredibly capable hands if you do.
The area is also extremely walkable with small delis and coffee shops on each corner and just a few blocks away from Rice University and Rice Village, not to mention the ever-popular Museum District that houses some of the best museums and exhibits in the country.
The Texas Medical Center is the at the heart of innovation in the city.
